About
Wildra is made by one person in Melbourne.
I’m a cinematographer by trade, which mostly means I’ve spent a long time thinking about how things look and how much they weigh. The rest of the time I’m out walking — the Victorian alps in winter, usually, where getting the preparation wrong has consequences.
Why this exists
The planning was scattered across a spreadsheet, a notes app, a weather site, a GPX file and my memory. Every trip I rebuilt the same knowledge from nothing, and every trip I forgot something I’d learnt the last time. Wildra is the thing I wanted: one place that holds the walk, the pack, the food and the weather, and then keeps it so the next trip starts from what you already know.
It isn’t a map app and it isn’t trying to be. Plenty of people do routes better than I could. Wildra is everything around the walking.
How it’s built
Alone, at night, in Melbourne. There’s no company behind it, no investors and nobody to answer to about growth. That’s the reason it works the way it does: your walks live in your own iCloud rather than on a server I own, because there’s no version of this where selling what you do outdoors is the plan.
Membership is what pays for it. That’s the whole model — no ads, no data, no third thing.
